Now im an ex-advertising strategy planner and i know all about telling a beautiful story to sell a concept or idea to a client. But what i've come across in my venture as an entrepreneur is down right ridiculous!!!!My first tryst with a rather unbelievable story was during my first interaction with the manager of one of the stores at which i retail at [lets not name drop here].
This store retails desi apparel your mix n match kind,as the conversation with the store manager progressed a certain someone i guess got a little carried away with the background of the fab designs.Believe it or not i was informed that all the embroidery and embellishments on the garments in her store were done by injured jawans!!!Even for someone who is more often that not naive i found this to be quite a crazy story and in due time i was proven right for there are no jawans sitting in a workshop doing embroidery!!this store has a workshop on the outskirts of mumbai where well trained tailors do the needful!!it shocks me and even brings me to uncontrolled laughter to think of the stories people spin to sell a product.
Another instance of a similar nature was when i was talking to a friend of mine who embelishes bed linnen for a well known store in Khar,my friend was waiting in the car and had me pop into the store to check out some of her designs. The over enthusiastic staff at the store on seeing my interest in the linen began to tell me about how the products were actually made by kharigars in a remote village and they were specially trained to create a source of livelihood for an entire village!!.Little did she know that the impoverished kharighar was actually sitting in the car waiting my return!!
Just the other day i came across an article about the same store and how they train painters in Kashmir to create more utilitarian products for the urban markets!!Come on really how can i believe any of it!!
I get that a story behind a product gives it more depth and meaning but spinning these crazy, outlandish lies defeats the purpose of bringing and credibility to the store and its offerings
