Art is a lie

Met up with a friend yesterday and had a very interesting conversation about the correlation between creativity/creative process and destruction/despair.He is also is a creative person and dabbles in film making, photography, writing and art amongst other things.I have to add, that meeting him yesterday was like a breath of fresh air,I had only met him once before in Goa about two years ago for only a couple of minutes ,but we stayed in touch through various social media platforms. It's so nice to met someone who isn't wearing a mask,is totally honest, full of optimism and willing to share so much of himself and his experiences with someone he barely knows.[i guess I don't were masks either so conversation flowed effortlessly]

A couple of drinks down and conversation as always, took a turn for the more personal, where we were both discussing about how break ups have this overwhelming ability to elicit extreme emotions,in his case it would have such a crippling impact that he wouldn't be able to work at that moment of time[not always] and ironically for me it was a more of a cathartic release of sorts. The creative process however, was tear stained and painful, but the resultant art that came out of those moments of vulnerability, would almost be like telling a lie to anyone who saw them without knowing what I was going through.I wouldn't want to take back or regret having felt so intensely at that moment in time, but we were both wondering about creating art but at what price? As creative artists or beings do have have to hit rock bottom, break even, to then be able to rise from the ashes and create art and if so would our lives just be a scattering of emotional turmoil for eternity?

"We all know Art is not the truth,
Art is a lie that makes us realise the truth."

Charles Bukowski in his blatantly honest, cut and dry style has this to say.

Floating not Frivolous

What has really changed in the digi savvy, click friendly Web 2.0 babies ...OK, we opine much more, ping too often, converse on multiple media platforms[sometimes all at once],we live voraciously online, net-worth gives way to networks...the list is endless...

Delving deeper that the superficial changes of this new age existence, there's something that's changed at a human psyche level, its almost like we are programmed very differently from our parents generation, with new codes, new hardware...

After much mulling over I think the basis of this generational chasm stems from the fact that we 'Float but are not frivolous'.As shallow as it may sound, its far from that.We are a new generation that has seen so much of change so quickly, we have no choice but to roll with it,to take life as it comes and learn to adapt or be left behind. We float through change almost effortlessly[well for most of the bit] but that doesn't mean our existence is not anchored by meaningful interactions.

We look at the web and all the cross-connections it spins as an opportunity to interact with like minded individuals, with people who have a picture, video or a point of view that makes for the meat in our understanding of change and  this ever changing life itself...

Like windows to parallel worlds, that don't compel you to take up residence but let you have a voice if you have something to say it allows you to floating in and out of discussion boards,blogs,tweets,updates,comments...Unlike the older generation we don't really seek out stability, don't have 5 year plans and 5 page long checklist of the things we need to do before we die.We create a subculture of connections that tap into the various facets that make us a whole, constantly updating, deleting, modifying the connections and the media platforms...

We don't look at the future with fear and worry but with a sense of wonderment...now what?what next?all these questions stemming from the innate need to feel good about the things/people we entertain at that given point in time. Our interests are an ever widening net that catches people at the same wave length, our career paths twist and turn grow organically as we explore ourselves and what lies ahead...

To the new age floaters!!a click away from a new exploration...
