Labour of love

I’d like to pay homage to the Indian classical dance form of 'Bharatanatyam',the enigmatic and vibrant dance form ,which finds its origins in the temple studded state of Tamil Nadu. Having trained as a Bharatanatyam dancer from the age of 6, the rigour and discipline it inculcates in a person is something I hold close to my heart.

Over the years this dance form has found international recognition and has adapted and infused modern elements to reflect an evolving society. Two of the leading Bharatanatyam dancers who have helped catapult Bharatanatyam onto the international stage are Smt. Alarmel Valli and Ms. Shobana Chandrakumar Pillai. I have vivd memories of evenings spent amidst the jasmine and sandalwood infused auditoriums watching in awe as Bharatanatyam dancers set the stage on fire with graceful yet deft dances, breathing life into the ancient scriptures and poems of yesteryear. Each artist  taking on the role of a storyteller interpreting and layering each script with music and dance movements to create a breathtaking experience for the audience.

A painting on a teapot is just a humble attempt at capturing the beauty of this dance form and in a way paying tribute to every dancer who dances today and keeps this dance form alive.

Idyllic Saturday afternoons

This is what idyllic Saturday afternoons look like,Tracy Chapman in the background,a pot of tea brewing merrily in the kitchen.Paints, brushes and lots of colour!!This teapot is work in progress one of six teapots I'm supposed to finish soon, four down two more to go.

Colour overdoes, guess i got a little carried away!!Did this on a 4x4 piece of plywood.Love what happened to my fingertips even more!!!

With the setting of the sun, there was more to finish or attempt at finishing,so i have an embarrassing number of pieces i have left unfinished. For some reason today seems like a good day to attempt at finishing them.

Buddha found the light!!

Finally finished a painting for one of my close friends Piyush aka Pondi!!Pondi holds the title of making me cry more than once and sadly he's unabashed about his very ungentlemanly  like behaviour, nevertheless he's one of my craziest, super talented, most annoying yet adorably childlike[sometimes childish] friends.

It was a piece I started a little less than a year ago and was supposed to be his wedding gift, but like many of the canvas pieces I've started, work came in the way and broke my momentum. As history would stand witness, when that happens the canvas invariably get shoved into the deep recesses of my mind and room, never to see the light of day again.

Luckily for him[or maybe not] this particular piece wasn't shoved into a corner in my room,in fact it floated around my room to the point that I just couldn't handle seeing it in it's half finished state. It was Piyush's birthday on Friday,I cracked up the music pulled out my paints and brushes and decided to go for it once and for all!!

Haaapppiieee birthday Pondi may this painting find its place on your wall and in your home for the years to come!!Many thanks for the patience and all the fun times we've have over the past 10 years!!
